October Skies Make For 'Cool' Evening In Sterling

Live concerts can be a good way to spend a cool spring evening.  October Skies is a must-see local band that brings its "progressive acoustic" - also called "contemporary folk pop" - sound to the masses and affords a great way to spend a Saturday night.

In 1994, when Kim Fields of Leesburg was just learning to play the guitar, she put an ad in the newspaper to find some other people with the same interests in music to start a band. She met Jeanette Phillips of Arlington.

They then hooked up with classical guitar player Cris Chillura, also of Arlington, in 1998, followed by Eric Stanley of Leesburg who plays jazz guitar and joined the band after jamming with them at a King's Court Tavern open mic night.

Fields and Chillura share their songwriting capabilities, but one of the most interesting spectacles is when they begin doing impromptu songs on stage.  "We're getting really good at it," said Fields. "Now we just need to start writing them down."

The songs they have written down and recorded have intensely personal lyrics.    "Some songs have words inspired by mistakes that I make," said Chillura, while Fields writes "to get it out of my heart." For a way to unwind after a long day, October Skies offers a laid back night away from the whirlwind of life in Northern Virginia.
